maximum rock n roll issue #321

Maximum Rocknroll rings in the New Year with a special photo issue. Featuring contributions from over 75 photographers, issue #321 is chock-a-block with killer punk photos from around the world. It includes an Aaron Cometbus/Anna Brown interview with longtime MRR contributor Murray Bowles (If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries…). We talk with Helge Schreiber, compiler of the last MRR photo issue, Welcome to Cruise Country (1987), and we also interview 924 Gilman St.’s house photographer Larry Wolfley. Brazilian photographers and editors of Fodido E Xerocado, Mateus Mondini and Daigo Oliva go head-to-head, Karoline Collins and Chrissy Piper interview each other, and Patrick Baclet talks about publishing his photobook, Out of Vogue. Token garage punk photographers Mark “icki” Murrmann and Chris “Canderson” Anderson get grilled. This special photo issue also includes an extensive, illustrated bibliography of punk photo books. But really the focus is on the photos. Lots and lots of photos. All this plus the usual columns, news and the most extensive review section in punk. MID JANUARY 2010 SMALL UPDATE

ARGENTINUM ASRUM "BLACK ALBUM" CD - "Argentinum Astrum sound like a bad hangover. They deliver headaches, blurred vision, and nausea in one untitled 26-minute track. This five-piece could astound black metal, doom, and noise artists alike by their originality. Argentinum Astrum push boundaries past mundane song structures. It's surprising how much variation they can fit in one track. Their best exists within the first five minutes. Feet march drunkenly. Feedback lingers before chords strike and drums crash. Before the riffs resume, feet stumble in a wave of warped oscillation. This riff-noise combination deceives four times, each one sounding as if the track will die. The band then muscles past these obstacles and continues with low-tuned, funeral doom. Meanwhile, Andrew Morrill's shrieking scream sounds like it could devour a small child.Their vigor doesn't stop there. From noise to doom, Argentinum Astrum conquer black metal after nine minutes. The chill is synonymous with the cover's white-on-black typography. Although the jewel case and one-page insert are boringly old-school, Argentinum Astrum make quality material. Mukeka di Rato/Hero Dishonest - Burzum Marley - Split CD - Previously released in 7” vinyl, this split has finally arrived as a CD. On the Brazilian side, the wackos from Mukeka Di Rato show that they’re more pessimistic, but not without the birth of another classic: the song “Burzum Marley”, which fuses black metal and reggae combined with genius lyrics. On the Finnish side, called “I And I Walked The Line”, Hero Dishonest shows their raw punk/hardcore side, with a version of Joy Division’s “Warsaw”.

ORDER NOW~! MRR #320

Order now.
RM 20ppd. add RM 3 for pos laju.

Here some description for issue #320.
Another month means another issue of MRR! The first issue of the next decade seems a good place to discuss the music of the decade we are leaving. MRR #320, the January 2010 issue, features numerous MRR columnists, shitworkers and reviewers pontificating on what went before musically, the platters that mattered in the, what do we call em, the zeroes? We also have interviews with cover stars from Japan, D-CLONE, Olympia Washington's BROKEN WATER, and streetpunks from the UK courtesy of CONTROL. There's also an interview with
author IAN GLASPER, who has just finished a three volume series on the UK underground, starting from the spiky punk of the early '80s in Burning
Britain, then moving on to the anarcho-punk scene with The Day the Country Died, and ending up with a book on the UK hardcore scene of the late '80s with Trapped in a Scene. As always we feature the most extensive punk music review section in print, plus all yer usual columnists... The cover was designed by Randy Ransome.

New arrival from Bullwhip records.

Grinding Halt "discography" tape GRINDING HALT plays down tuned metalcrust that sounds a lot like His Hero Is Gone and Uranus. A collection of their previous releases (split 12’ with Vuur and Sprookjeshof lp) plus 3 unreleased new tracks. Members of Shikari & The Last Mile. Listen songs : www.myspace.com/wwghd
RM 6/ USD 4

QUEST OF QUASAR - Nok-Tur-Nal TAPE
Review : This is pretty much what you might get if you mix some His Hero Is Gone/Uranus dark and heavy type of hardcore with some French scream/emo. It is heavy, dark and emotive with just a little bit of metal thrown in the mix. It is a pretty volatile mix of modern hardcore and will serve as a good soundtrack for the upcoming apocalypse. No joke. You don’t play this to get the people dancing happily on the dance floor. You play this to get people all pumped up about the end of this fucked up world. With all the bullshit that happening around us, who wouldn’t get pumped about the Armageddon? - Dead Pigs Zine
RM 6/ USD 4

Project Hopeless "Valkommen" tape
UK peace-punk-influenced hardcore from Malmo, Sweden, firing a litany of political attacks against patriarchy, poverty and consumerism. From these vocal diatribes and tribal patterns, the songs burst into noisy, blasting, full-throttle crust thrash more common to Sweden with high-speed, standard issue screeched/shouted vocal trade-offs. The circle-logo cover displays heavily stippled skulls, gasmasks, factories, and the wasteland, but the thoughtful lyric explanations mark this as sincerity as opposed to out-and-out mimicry. Solid. review fromm Maximum Rocknroll
RM 6/ USD 4

M40"Historien Svarta Vingsi Ag" tape
Review : Crust/hardcore from Lidköping. Twelve songs of total fury! Full length album recorded at HoboRec, Jönköping. The songs are mixed with slower parts, which keeps the record as a whole interesting and focused. As on a prime note; crustpunk has never - and will never be - better than this. Think Totalt Jävla Mörker mixed with Neurosis!
